The Aurora Borealis put on quite the show last night.
The first time I saw it, a couple of years ago now, and posted about it on here, a couple of people asked me what I could see with the naked eye and I answered that I could see columns rising up into the sky but they were grey and I couldn't see any colour at all.
Many of the pictures you will see will be made with long exposures and will not depict what you actually see.
I've witnessed it a few times since then and I expect many of you have too, but last night and during the big one in May colours were clearly seen with the naked eye, both red and green even where there was quite a lot of light pollution.
This time lapse was taken in my back garden and it certainly isn't perfectly dark. It is made up of a sequence of 650 4 second exposures, at 400 iso and an aperture of F 1.4.
So the movement is speeded up, 78 minutes compressed into 26 seconds. But you can see movement with the naked eye and though not as bright the colours clearly too and last night it was a 270 degree panorama, this was taken looking WNW. The bright star is Jupiter rising.

I couldn't believe that I actually saw this from my urban garden in Wolverhampton. A internet friend in Wisconsin took a similar photo in her back garden to mine. I love the way we were all so interconnected through visible electromagnetic energy - VISIBLE just to emphasise our interconnectedness!!!!
